Luke looked up blankly. All four men were staring at him. Blackie was the first to move. He gripped Luke's arm, grabbed his hand and offered awkward words of condolence. Zeeman handed him a brown envelope and explained complicated travel plans.

‘When you get back to Battalion, go straight to the Adjutant Officer – Major Soares. Give him this envelope. He will get you cleared out. The major and I were platoon commanders together. Give him this letter, and he will facilitate everything. He owes it to me. Sterkte Luke.’

Luke asked for a cigarette. Blackie had to help him light it. It glowed cherry red. Confused, disbelieving eyes panned them, molten with pain and loss.
